Reporting to the Warden, the Deputy Warden, Operations ensures public safety through the development and operation of restorative practices specifically designed to change inmate attitudes, develop skills, and improve lifestyles. The Deputy Warden of Operations provides inmates a safe environment to develop job skills through work activities and rehabilitative programs, manages services for the physical, mental and spiritual health of inmates and promotes community reintegration to reduce reoffending.This is a  key position in setting professional and healthy work standards and ensuring that service delivery is timely, appropriate and reflects positively on the facility, division and the Department of Justice.

As the Deputy Warden,Operations you will assist the Warden in the management and development of an effective, efficient, and motivated correctional leadership team. You will also assist in managing the delivery of security services that ensures the safety of the public, inmates and staff. This includes ensuring officer compliance with standing orders and divisional directives through positive discipline and coaching. You will ensure that the physical structures of the Baffin Correctional Centre are secure, maintained, and upgraded based on a an annual security review.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are usually obtained through completion of a College Diploma from a recognized institution in Social Sciences or Criminology, or a related field. A minimum of five (5) years experience in Corrections with three (3) years supervisory experience is required. During the probationary period you will be required to acquire Class five (5) driver’s license with ability to attain Class four (4) license and the following training: First Aid/CPR, Mental Health First Aid, WHIMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System); Cultural Sensitivity Training specifically geared toward the Inuit Culture, Conflict Resolution, and Staff Performance Management Planning.

Assets include experience in a Correctional Services Environment, in a mental health, or treatment services environment. An updated First Aid and CPR certification is preferred.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), English and French.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
