As per HRM Directive 518, this employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit only.

Reporting to the Supervisor Health Programs, the Caretaker ensures the Health Center runs smoothly. The successful candidate will provide building, equipment, and vehicle maintenance as well as perform regular janitorial duties. Interpreting for unilingual clients is also an occasional job requirement. Rotational On Call for X-Ray and Medivacs will also be required.

The Caretaker is responsible for all aspects in making sure that the Health Center is a sanitary and secure location. In addition to janitorial duties, the successful candidate must notify the manager, support services when items are damaged/missing or when stocks are low. Another aspect of this job is to monitor the fire and safety protocols and ensure there is a working relationship with the fire chief to formulate a plan for mutual assistance in disaster situations.

The successful candidate must be mature, responsible, dependable, and able to work independently. Maintaining a high level of confidentiality is also an important element of the job. They must also be able to perform heavy lifting and understand that they may be required to assist in emergency situations (i.e. preparation of the dead).

Requirements for this job are:

  • Completion of Grade 8
  • Possession of Class 5 Driver’s license
  • 1 year of Mechanical/carpentry experience
  • Ability to communicate in Inuktut

Assets:

  • Basic computer skills
  • WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificates

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
