Tobacco Has No Place Here – Time to Quit

IQALUIT, NU (January 16, 2014) – The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health is urging smokers and users of other tobacco products in the territory to consider now as the "time to quit." This is the third year of the government's awareness-raising "Tobacco Has No Place Here" campaign.

Communities throughout Nunavut will celebrate "Tobacco Has No Place Here" and National Non-Smoking Week with a variety of activities during the week of January 19 – 25, 2014.

"Tobacco use in Nunavut doesn't just harm individual health. It ‘steals our future’ by harming families, communities, culture and finances," said Nunavut Health Minister Monica Ell. "Not only are Nunavummiut suffering, we are also losing valuable members of our society to early death from tobacco. It's time to quit. Quitting smoking or using tobacco is not easy, but we have to do it. Tobacco users are encouraged to try quitting. This is one way to take back our health."

This year, the "Tobacco Has No Place Here" campaign is encouraging tobacco users to sign up for the "Time to Quit" contest. People who sign up to commit to quit using tobacco during the month of March 2014, are eligible to win prizes, including travel worth $5,000 and a MacBook Pro. "Quit buddies" who support them are eligible to win an iPad mini. Participants can enter online at or Entry forms and contest information will also be mailed to every household in Nunavut and will be available at community health centres. The draw will be held in April.

This year, the government is expanding the free support available to help smokers and other tobacco users to quit. Adding to the toll-free telephone support currently available 24 hours a day at the Nunavut Quitline, 1-866-368-7848, trained counselors will also offer chat and email support at beginning January 20.

"Time to Quit" contest information, including official rules, will be available at beginning January 20.
