National Community Health Representative Day

September 16, 2022, marks the 60-year anniversary of National Community Health Representative Day. In Nunavut, this is a day of appreciation for community Health representatives (CHRs) and their essential contributions to health services across the territory.

Nunavut’s CHRs provide various services including health education, health promotion, and disease prevention that aligns with the Inuit perspective of wellness, where the body, mind, spirit, and soul are connected.

CHRs promote healthy practices and awareness on various issues ranging from:

  • Nutrition.
  • Sexual health.
  • Maternal child health.
  • Mental health.
  • Oral health.
  • Environment health.
  • Tobacco and cannabis harm reduction.
  • Substance use awareness.
  • Safety and injury prevention.
  • Other emerging health concerns in the communities.

CHRs enhance the health of Nunavummiut by developing, implementing, and monitoring evidence-based public health programs and initiatives. These programs integrate Inuit Societal Values and empower Nunavummiut to live healthy lives.

The Government of Nunavut is proud of the ongoing work of the territory’s healthcare providers. Please take any opportunity to thank our CHRs for all they have done during the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the ongoing contributions they make to healthcare across the territory.
