Income Assistance: Seniors Burial Benefit
On September 1, 2021, The Department of Family Services established a Seniors Burial Benefit to help relieve some of the strain of losing a close family member by covering certain costs of the burial.
Families of Nunavut residents being buried in Nunavut who are 60 years of age or older, are now eligible to receive this benefit.
Applicants for the benefit must contact their local Family Services office in order to fill out an application to be considered to receive the benefit. Applicants will need to provide proof of their relatives passing such as a death certificate and an invoice or receipt for the burial costs.
The Seniors Burial Benefit covers costs such as:
- Preparation of the body.
- Transportation of the body to the community burial site.
- Casket.
- Grave marker.
- Administrative fees.
To submit applications or for more information on the Seniors Burial Benefit please email fs.seniors@gov.nu.ca.
