Waste Reduction Week Challenge
The Department of Environment is challenging Nunavummiut to participate in Waste Reduction Week from October 21 to 27. Avatimik Kamattiarniq requires we care for our land, animals and environment. Cutting back on the waste we use will help us all become better environmental stewards. We can use the 5R’s to help us: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Repurpose.
Reducing waste starts by refusing things. Every item you choose not to buy is one less opportunity to add to our landfills.
Reuse something you already have instead of purchasing new items to reduce pollution and conserve energy.
Instead of throwing it out, repair it! You can help by sharing skills and tools with others.
Repurpose old things and use it for something else. This may be an opportunity to be creative!
Think about how your consumer habits affect the air you breathe and the water running through our rivers.
Buy items that are made from recycled materials to cut back on pollution.
Recover - Household Hazardous Waste
Hazardous Waste is dangerous to human health and to the environment. Instead of buying harmful household products, use eco-friendly cleaning alternatives and safely dispose of Household Hazardous Waste.
Nunavummiut are encouraged to take pictures of themselves in their waste reduction efforts and to post them to the GN Facebook or Twitter page using the hashtag #WasteReductionWeekNU and #WasteReductionWeek.
Waste Reduction Week is an annual event and is celebrated across Canada. The event encourages Canadians to take action to adopt more environmentally conscious choices, reduce waste and create solutions to the many environmental challenges we face.
