Department of Environment is mandated to ensure the protection, promotion and sustainable use of natural resources in Nunavut through Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ). Reporting to the Manager, Wildlife Research, the Social Science Researcher develops programs of research to gather Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) on wildlife in Nunavut, including caribou, muskox, and polar bear. Under the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement (NLCA) and Government of Nunavut (GN) Wildlife Act, the Department of Environment’s Wildlife Management Division works with co-management partners to generate information on the status and trends of wildlife in Nunavut, in order to sustainably manage wildlife for all Nunavummiut and Nunavut Inuit harvesters.

The Social Science Researcher will lead the coordination of IQ research on Nunavut’s wildlife, by working with a range of stakeholders to ensure that biological research is complemented by traditional and local knowledge.  The Social Science Researcher will liaise with traditional knowledge keepers, contractors, wildlife biologists, social scientists and community organizations to collate, conduct, and communicate research focused on IQ and wildlife.

The candidate will have excellent competency and awareness of Inuit culture along with skills normally acquired through a Bachelors of Social Science or related field, plus two years of experience in wildlife ecology, social science, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Inuit Qaujimajatuqanqit, and/or anthropology.  Skills in data management and analysis, computers, and strong communication skills for a wide range of audiences are required. Administrative and organizational skills for monitoring budgets and contracts are also required.  A Masters in Social Science or related field, preferably related to traditional knowledge, will be considered an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Ensure that your resume demonstrates your competencies and skills required for this role, as outlined in this advertisement.
