GN employees see increase and expansion of Nunavut Household Allowance
Iqaluit, Nunavut (May 9, 2024) – Government of Nunavut employees living in private housing might have noticed their paycheques are larger this month, thanks to new increases to the Nunavut Household Allowance.
The Nunavut Household Allowance is an employee benefit for Government of Nunavut (GN) staff who own or rent their own home on the private market, as opposed to living in subsidized staff housing.
In April, Minister of Finance Lorne Kusugak announced that the Nunavut Household Allowance would be increased from $400 to $1,000 per month, per household, and paid in equal installments on the first two paycheques of the month. Minister Kusugak also announced today that more GN employees are now eligible for the benefit.
“Our government committed in its Katujjiluta mandate to explore ways to make private ownership and rentals more affordable for Nunavummiut as a way of supporting staff to move from staff housing into homes of their own. This increased allowance provides support for staff who own or rent on the private market,” said Minister Kusugak.
“We also recognize that many of members of our hard-working public service are long-term casual employees. In addition to the new $1,000 allowance amount, I’m pleased to announce that casual employees with more than six months of continuous service are now eligible to receive the Nunavut Household Allowance.”
Information on the Nunavut Household Allowance is available on the Government of Nunavut’s website. Employees who receive the Nunavut Household Allowance are reminded to update their information and addresses on file. For more information, please contact @email or call 1-800-316-3324.
