Manager, Educator Development

Reporting to the Director, Educator Development, the Manager, Educator Development is responsible for overseeing the effective operation of the Educator Development unit. In doing so, he/she is accountable for the design and coordination of the development, implementation and delivery of recruitment and orientation programs for new educators; management of the mentorship program for current educators; and the stewardship of Nunavut’s (educator) Professional Development Framework(s). He/she supports a system of formative assessment that is focused on the continuous improvement of all Nunavut educators with the goal of excellence in teaching and leadership standards. Ultimately, this ensures that students receive high quality education which positions them to better access local job opportunities and function as citizens of the world.
As a whole, the Educator Development Division is mandated to ensure that Nunavut’s educators are appropriately trained to effectively deliver the Territory’s Education program including curriculum, assessments and student supports. As such, the Division and its Units undertake a range of duties that include: (a) developing and delivering training targeted to educators such as principles, learning coaches and classroom teachers and specialized school staff such as Student Support Assistants and Ilinniarvimmi Inuusiliriji; (b) ensuring educators are in possession of and maintain adequate certification(s); and (c) providing targeted supports for orientation, mentorship opportunities, and improved professional practice.
In successful carrying out this position’s responsibilities, the Manager, Educator Development must effectively function as the Department’s principle contact on matters relating to educator development (e.g., teacher induction training, certification and standards, recruitment, orientation training, mentorship matters, the Professional Development Framework(s), educator assessment, etc.) and providing advice and guidance as needed. This responsibility involves in managing the annual budget assigned to the Unit in accordance with the requirements of the Financial Administration Act, departmental policies and providing estimates on future budgetary needs. The incumbent will work closely with the regional School Operations and the Nunavut Teachers’ Association to deliver Teacher orientation.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Adult Education plus five (5) years of experience in education and one year of experience in program and project development and implementation at the school/regional/territorial level is also required for this position. Familiar with or capable of becoming familiar with the tools (e.g., computers), IT systems (i.e., records tracking systems, communication tools/software applications), and software (e.g., MS Office Suite, Adobe Suite, website, social media, etc.) required as part of this job. A Master’s Degree in a related field would be considered an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
