Renewing a Liquor Licence
All licences issued under the Liquor Act expire on March 31 of each year, unless there is a different date specified on the licence.
The Nunavut Liquor Licensing Board has established a three-step licence renewal process to streamline applications and approvals.
Step 1
All licence holders must appear before the Board at its January meeting. At the meeting, requirements for renewal applications are explained and renewal application packages, which include a document checklist, are distributed. Licence holders in Iqaluit must attend the meeting in person; those located outside of Iqaluit may call in to the meeting.
Step 2
Licence holders must complete the renewal application and submit all required documents (identified in the document checklist) to the Board by February 15.
Step 3
Licence holders who have submitted all required renewal documents by February 15 receive their renewed licence after the March Board meeting.
Licence holders who have not submitted all required renewal documents by February 15 must appear before the Board in March to explain why their application is not complete and to request an extension of their existing licence.
The Board only gives a licence extension if a licence holder can provide a reasonable explanation for not completing the renewal application in the specified timelines. A licence that is not extended expires on March 31 and the licence holder must make a new application for a licence.

Renewal Fees
The fees associated with licence renewal must be submitted with each application.
- Fee for off-premises licence: $500; five per cent of sales will be charged when the licence holder purchases liquor.
- Fee for all other licences – $200; five per cent of sales will be charged when the licence holder purchases liquor.
Cheques for fees should be made out to Nunavut Liquor Licensing Board.
Mail or deliver the completed form, the additional documents (if any), and a cheque for fees to the Board’s executive secretary.
