Institutional Nurse

This employment opportunity is restricted to Government of Nunavut employees residing in Iqaluit only.

This position is full-time and permanent, recruitment bonuses include: $3,000 on start date, $3,000 at 6 months of service, $5,000 at 1 year of service and $7,000 at 2 years of service.

Reporting to the Health Services Manager, the Institutional Nurse (Nurse) provides comprehensive direct health care services in accordance with the Nunavut Standards of Nursing Practice and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics to ensure the provision of safe standardized health care to the inmates housed in all Iqaluit custodial facilities. Goals are to promote, protect, and restore health by providing education, prevention, and reduction of the incidence of disease, and disability. Correction Facility health services include: providing a comprehensive nursing health assessment, therapeutic intervention and treatment management in coordination with appropriate disciplines in order to promote clients health and wellness, including but not limited to communicable disease treatment and surveillance, chronic disease monitoring and follow up. This position is based on the 42 hour pay grid, 12 hour shifts 4 days on and 4 days off.

The Nurse will have a responsibility as an inmate advocate in relation to health issues and concerns and in the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices through a variety of health education programs. The Nurse works closely with outside health agencies coordinating treatment, follow up release care, and referrals. The Nurse ensures continuity of health care when transferring inmates to other territorial or federal facilities by following Correctional Services Canada and Nunavut Correction policies. The incumbent models and promotes excellence in nursing care while caring for low, medium and high-risk inmates  ensuring that all Iqaluit based custodial facilities, safety and security measures, policies and procedures are adhered to.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse designation from a recognized Canadian university and registered with the RNANTNU, along with at least two (2) years nursing experience in an acute care or institutional setting, and experience with advanced assessment skills. Current CPR/First Aid certificate/AED is a requirement. Current Immunization Certification is required or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment. Two (2) years’ experience in a Nunavut Community would be an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
