Fisheries Sector Specialist

This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Kugluktuk only.

 

Reporting to the Manager Fisheries and Sealing, the Fisheries Sector Specialist is the division’s specialist on all matters relating to the fishery development, research and implementation of the Nunavut Fisheries Strategy.

The Sector Specialist will identify opportunities for inshore fisheries development and will plan, develop and carry out projects, secure funding and support community development initiatives the support and encourage sustainable fisheries development within the mandate of the Fisheries and Sealing Division. The Sector Specialist will also provide business management and technical support to the fishing industry. 

The Fisheries Sector Specialist act as an advisor on all matters relating to inshore and inland subsistence, recreational and commercial fisheries development; implement annual and long-term operational strategies and plans to promote establishment of the fishing industry in communities to build local capacity and create jobs through sustainable businesses and organizations; develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the fisheries experts, researchers, DFO, industry and community fishing representatives and maintain regular dialogue to ensure that the information from which the Department is working is current and accurate; foster sustainable use of natural resources, local human resources, infrastructure and community social organizations in accordance with principle of sound science and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit for the benefit of Nunavut’s economy; examine current gaps in the development of a sustainable fishing industry in Nunavut and developing policy and program options for consideration; promote fisheries development and capacity building in industry sectors, associations, small business and communities; deliver presentations to Nunavummiut, community groups, industry and other organizations to advise on departmental legislation, policies, strategies, guidelines and programs; market and promote Nunavut Fisheries at tradeshows, public events, career shows, and conferences; report on results of research programs and program evaluation; assist industry DFO when necessary, to ensure that fisheries science and monitoring needs in Nunavut are met; provide business management and technical support to the fishing industry throughout Nunavut; provide quality advise to the Manager on all matters pertaining to fisheries in Nunavut; and promote dialogue with community and industry representatives to develop strategies and evaluate programs for the development of Nunavut fisheries. 

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized diploma in Environmental Technology or related technical diploma. Four (4) years of experience in environmental management or related field which includes experience in applying or evaluating environmental policies and/or programs. An undergraduate degree in marine biology, resource management, ecology, fisheries development, or fisheries and aquaculture is an asset.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

As this is a term position until November, 2027, current indeterminate Government of Nunavut employees may be offered a competitive transfer assignment for the duration of the term if they are deemed to be the successful candidate, however this is subject to managerial approval.
