The Department of Family Services is proud to offer the Rebekah Uqi Williams Scholarship, specifically tailored for Nunavummiut who are pursuing careers in social work, counseling, or psychology. This scholarship is dedicated to supporting the educational aspirations of individuals committed to making a significant impact in their communities.

Ms. Williams began her remarkable career as a nurse in her home community of Arctic Bay. Driven by a passion to address broader social issues affecting Inuit, she transitioned into social work. Her illustrious career saw her rise to prominent positions including Assistant Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Member of the National Parole Board of Canada, and Deputy Commissioner of Nunavut. This scholarship honours her legacy of service and commitment to social justice. 

Scholarship Details

The department is offering five grants, each up to $10,000, to assist dedicated students in covering their educational expenses. These scholarships are intended to lighten the financial burden on students who are determined to follow in Ms. Williams footsteps by contributing positively to their communities.

Application Requirements 

Applicants must submit the following items in a complete package:

  • Application form
  • Proof of residency or enrollment: applicants must provide proof of residency and/or enrollment under the Nunavut Agreement.
  • Full-time registration: applicants must confirm their full-time registration at an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Personal submission: a written submission of 250 to 500 words detailing your chosen program of study, the reason for choosing it, the contributions you plan to make to your community after completing your program, and the expected completion date.

The application deadline is October 20, 2024.
