Minister of Family Services

Margaret Nakashuk was re-elected by acclamation to represent the constituency of Pangnirtung in the 6th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.

Ms. Nakashuk was elected to serve on the Executive Council during the November 17, 2021, proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. Minister Nakashuk was formally sworn into office on November 19, 2021. 

Ms. Nakashuk previously sat as a Member of the 5th Legislative Assembly, during which she held a number of Ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Culture and Heritage and Minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation.

Prior to her election, Ms. Nakashuk was a senior official in the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Family Services. Her previous professional experience includes positons as an Adult Educator and a Career Development Officer. Ms. Nakashuk’s educational background includes participation in the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Program, the Management Studies Program at Nunavut Arctic College and the Government of Nunavut’s Hivuliqtikhanut Leadership Program.

Ms. Nakashuk has served as an elected member of the Municipal Council of Pangnirtung and the community’s District Education Authority. Ms. Nakashuk is a former Justice of the Peace. Her volunteer activities include work with Elders and youth.

Margaret and Andrew Nakashuk have two children, Natasha and Anthony, and one grandson, Felix. Ms. Nakashuk’s personal interests include sewing, knitting, baking and travelling.
