Homeschooling versus Distance Learning
Please note that homeschooling is different from distance learning in that homeschooling occurs off school premises and led by the student’s parent, while distance learning can support homeschooling, it is administered by a virtual site and can be accessed at either school or home premises.
Furthermore, homeschooling also differs from learning from home as for homeschooling the learning is administered by the parent/guardian and with learning from home it is virtually administered by school staff during unforeseen circumstances such as the pandemic.
Homeschooling
Students who may have circumstances that limit them from physically attending a school still deserve to have access to the education system.
Students between ages 6 to 18 that are registered in a Nunavut school can apply through their District Education Authority (DEA) to be in a homeschooling program.
A child cannot be homeschooled unless they are registered in a homeschooling program through their local school and approved by the DEA. If approved for your child to be homeschooled, parents can be reimbursed up to a maximum of $1000 per student per year to help with programming costs for homeschooling.
If you are interested in registering your child in homeschool programming, please reach out to your community school and discuss options for approval.

Distance Learning
Not all communities have the educator capacity to offer all secondary school courses students may wish to pursue. Some students may need to take advanced courses, such as math or science for post-secondary studies and these courses may not be offered in their local community due to lack of subject matter expertise or insufficient student numbers. Furthermore, students may also have timetable conflicts that prevent them from taking desired courses. In the event of these occurrences, distance learning can be used to provide access to specific courses or programs.
Distance learning courses may be delivered through Vista Virtual School, Centre francophone d'education a distance and any distance education providers that meet ministerial curriculum approval. If approved, all costs for distance education courses are covered by the Department of Education.
Please contact your principal and school staff to discuss conditions for approval for distance education, if virtual learning is appropriate, how to apply to distance virtual platforms and how the school can best supervise/support your child’s distance learning.
