Custodian

This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Igloolik, Kimmirut, Pangnirtung and Pond Inlet only.


Reporting to the Principal, the Custodian has the responsibility of maintaining a sanitary and safe environment for the students and staff of the school. In doing so, the Custodian plays a significant role in maintaining the operations and functionality of the school and supporting a learning environment that is conducive to student success.


The purpose of this position is to maintain a safe, secure, comfortable and sanitary school. By doing this, the Custodian helps to create a positive learning environment for students and pleasant working environments for school staff.


The candidate must have knowledge of how to properly handle the hazardous materials within the school and how to properly dispose of hazardous material wastes. The candidate must also have knowledge of proper lifting techniques. Other skills required for this position include proper cleaning techniques and the use of specific cleaners for various surfaces. The candidate must also be skilled in the use of cleaning equipment such as industrial vacuum cleaners and buffers.


To fulfill the duties of the Custodian position, a candidate must have knowledge of the School Crisis Response Manual, the school’s Inuuqatigitsarniq Policy, the Government of Nunavut Public Service Code of Ethics and Values, and an ability to conduct themselves accordingly.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job may reasonably be obtained by someone who has completed Grade 6 of education or possesses equivalent life experience.


This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
