Iqaluit, NU

The Hamlet of Pangnirtung declared a local state of emergency this morning, April 2, 2015.

A fire at the power plant in Pangnirtung began at approximately 1:30 a.m. on April 2. Fire crews have extinguished the fire at the plant.

This fire has caused community-wide power outages that are expected to last until further notice. Residents are advised to conserve water. A warming shelter has been opened at the Attagoyuk Ilisavik School.

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) maintenance staff arrived in Pangnirtung at approximately 6 a.m. to assess the fire damage at the power plant. Additional QEC personnel are also being sent in via air charter to assist with emergency co-ordination.

QEC has an emergency generating unit on site, separate from the power plant, and is working to restore partial power to the community. QEC is also working to procure additional emergency generators for the community. Residents are advised to conserve any available power unit services, once power is restored.
