Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq – Inuktut Language Month to Take Place in April 2023
The Department of Culture and Heritage is announcing that Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq – Inuktut Language Month will take place in April 2023. Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq has historically been held during the month of February, however, moving forward, it will now be held in April. Recognizing the celebratory nature of this initiative, Inuktut Language Month will coincide with the spring festivities that already occur across Nunavut during this time of year.
This year’s theme will be “Qulliq”, the traditional oil lamp used by Inuit. The qulliq enabled our ancestors to survive in harsh conditions and reflects the warmth of Inuit culture and community.
Originally launched as a “Language Week” in 2000, Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq has grown into a full month of events and activities aimed at affirming the richness, importance, and diversity of Inuktut. GN departments will be developing their own initiatives to support and promote Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq. This month is an opportunity to showcase programs that preserve, protect, and promote Inuktut.
Nunavummiut are invited to join the celebrations by sharing their experiences and stories around the theme of “Qulliq”. Help promote Inuktut every day and participate in the fun on social media using #Quviasuutiqarniq.
