Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017
Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq is Nunavut’s annual celebration of Inuktut and Inuit culture. The theme for 2017 is Inuit Unikkaaqtuat (Inuit Legends).
February is Inuktut Language Month. This is a time Nunavummiut celebrate Inuit language and culture across our territory. The theme for Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 is Unikkaaqtuat (Inuit Legends). Our traditional and contemporary Inuit legends are an important form of art and cultural expression, showing relationships, spirituality, and our perceptions of the world.
Our office will distribute these resources in February. If you don’ t receive these resources, please contact Tocasie Burke (TBurke@gov.nu.ca) or Saa Pitsiulak (SPitsiulak@gov.nu.ca) to request copies.
This celebration is for all Nunavummiut! Let’ s learn and teach. Let’s sing and tell stories. Let’ s take action together.
The Department of Culture and Heritage in Iqaluit celebrate the start of Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 – Language Month – by wearing their blue Inuit Titirausingit keyboard shirts and holding their Inuugatta banner, which can be translated to mean “we are all Inuit and we are alive.” Join Culture and Heritage in celebrating Language Month by engaging in this year’s theme, Unikkaaqtuat – Inuit legends.
Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 - Culture and Heritage employees Saa Pitsiulak (left) and Tocasie Burke (right) hold up copies of Unikkaaqtuat (Inuit Legends) workbooks, which will be shipped to every community in Nunavut for distribution.
