Reporting to the Deputy Warden/Programs, the Counselor will function as an Addiction Program Facilitator for the offenders based on traditional Inuit Culture values and knowledge. Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, the guiding principal for the Government of Nunavut is the foundation for this position. The incumbent will work directly with offenders through individual counseling; group counseling and best practices based interventions. The incumbent’s primary responsibility will be to facilitate a Substance Abuse Program indirectly supervised by the Manager of Psychological Services at the Baffin Correctional Centre. The Counselor will facilitate the Inuit culture based programs, where the incumbent will take all necessary precautions to ensure that the safe and secure custody if the offenders, the safety of the staff and the society are adhered to, within established divisional guidelines, during out of Centre programs.
The successful candidate must have thorough knowledge in traditional Inuit justice system and/or practice, community resources in Nunavut, and have excellent facilitating and counseling skills. The ability to develop, deliver, maintain and manage programs. You must have strong background in the cultural beliefs and lifestyle of the Inuit in Nunavut, Primary working language of Inuktitut; the incumbent must be fluent in reading, writing and speaking in Inuktitut as well as speaking in English. Minimum of 3 years corrections or community program development experience and minimum of 5 year’s experience in working as a counselor either in the field of addictions and/or grief and lost. You must have demonstrated ability to produce and deliver a healing program based on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit respecting community standards.
Equivalencies that consist of a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities to formal education and experience requirements will be considered.
This position is not included in the Nunavut Employees Union and has a starting salary of $86,873.00 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of $15,016.00 per annum.
