Nunavut extends State of Emergency – Iqaluit

Iqaluit, Nunavut (November 9, 2021) – Nunavut’s Minister of Community and Government Services has extended the State of Emergency in Iqaluit until November 23, 2021.

To date, the GN has taken the following measures;

• Purchase, transportation and distribution of bottled water address the immediate potable water needs of Iqaluit residents.
• Commissioning the GN’s mobile water treatment plant.
• Transportation of potable water pumps and storage tanks.
• Providing technical assessments and design work to restore City’s water distribution services.
• Developing treatment system bypass and remediation options.
• Requesting assistance from the federal government for an additional mobile water plant.

The extension of the state of emergency will allow the GN to continue its work supporting the city’s response to the water treatment and supply issues in the community.

The GN continues to work with the Government of Canada and the City of Iqaluit to mobilize the Canadian Armed Force’s water treatment equipment and distribution operations in Iqaluit.

The state of emergency will be in effect for 14 days, from November 10 to November 23, 2021. This order does not affect the ongoing Public Health Emergency declared to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
