Fire Prevention Week 2017
Fire Prevention Week is from October 8 to 14, 2017. This year’s theme is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out”
Every fire safety team starts with firefighters - but they can't do it alone. Effective fire safety depends on teamwork. The Office of the Fire Marshal would like to remind Nunavummiut of the following home fire safety tips:
- Draw a map of your home, showing all doors and windows.
- Visit each room, and find two ways out.
- All windows and doors should open easily. You should be able to use them to get outside.
- Make sure your home has smoke alarms, and push the test button to make sure each alarm is working.
- Pick a meeting place outside, in front of your home. Plan for everyone to meet there.
- Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
- Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
- Learn the emergency phone number for your fire department.
- Practice your home fire drill!
Students from kindergarten to Grade 9 are invited to take part in the annual Fire Prevention Week colouring, poster design and essay contest. Please contact your school for more information about how to enter.
Being prepared can save your life. During Fire Prevention Week, talk to your family and children about fire safety at home and in your community.
