Save 10 - At Home

There are many things that you can do at home to save energy. When you save energy at home, you help the environment by reducing the amount of energy that you consume and limiting the amount of resources that need to be supplied to you by utilities.

Controlling the temperature of your home with proper use of a thermostat and limiting heat loss decreases the amount of energy needed to keep your home comfortable and limits the amount of fuel that needs to be shipped to you. Turning off lights and other equipment when not in use decreases the amount of electricity that you use which decreases the production of greenhouse gas by your utility supplier. Limiting your use of water decreases the amount of water that must be supplied to you by the Municipality.

Saving energy at home is not only good for the environment, it saves you money. Small changes in your daily routine that reduce the energy can add up quickly. Tips that are used to save energy and water elsewhere in the world can have an even bigger impact in Nunavut where utilities can cost 30 times more* than utilities in other regions of Canada.

The following are some tips that you can use at home to save energy and money:

*Based on a comparison between the cost of water in Halifax, Nova Scotia and in Iqaluit, Nunavut. It should be noted that Iqaluit has one of the lower water rates in Nunavut.
