About Us

“Inuit knowledge, culture, language and history have undergone immense lifestyle changes. The role of elders in sustaining and promoting oral and cultural traditions through our programs are important for future generations. We work towards ensuring that the Government of Nunavut preserves, develops and enhances Nunavut’s culture, heritage, and languages for all Nunavummiut. I encourage you to browse through our website and make use of the tools and information that will allow you to learn more about Inuit Culture and Heritage”

Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017

February is Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq - Inuktut Language Month, a time for Nunavummiut to celebrate Inuit language and culture across our territory. This year’s theme is Unikkaaqtuat, which means Inuit legends. We encourage everyone to participate in this year’s celebration by speaking, teaching, and learning Inuktut!

The Department of Culture and Heritage in Iqaluit celebrate the start of Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 – Language Month – by wearing their blue Inuit Titirausingit keyboard shirts and holding their Inuugatta banner, which can be translated to mean “we are all Inuit and we are alive.” Join Culture and Heritage in celebrating Language Month by engaging in this year’s theme, Unikkaaqtuat – Inuit legends.

Celebrate Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017!

Culture and Heritage employees Saa Pitsiulak (left) and Tocasie Burke (right) hold up Unikkaaqtuat (Inuit Legends) workbooks, which are being shipped to every community in Nunavut. The workbooks contain a collection of Inuit legend stories, as well as interactive activities like crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions.

Celebrate and learn about Inuit legends by completing your workbook with your family and friends! For more information, contact Saa at
