Information on proposed civil forfeiture law

Start Date: January 6, 2016

End Date: January 31, 2016

Nunavut-wide 45 sec

The Government of Nunavut is holding public consultations on a proposed civil forfeiture law. This new law would allow the territorial government to obtain a court order to confiscate property that is either the "proceeds" or an "instrument" of illegal activity. For example, this would include cash received from a drug deal or a vehicle used to illegally transport drugs or alcohol.

The Department of Justice has information on their website explaining the legislative proposal. The website includes questions for Nunavummiut to provide feedback on the proposal by email or regular mail. The department will accept feedback in any of the official languages.

Pamphlets describing the proposed civil forfeiture law in all official languages will also be made available at the hamlet offices in January 2016.
