Reporting to the Manager, Wildlife Research, the Wildlife Biologist II – High Arctic develops and conducts wildlife research and management initiatives designed to meet the Minister’s obligations under the Nunavut Lands Claim Agreement and to provide basis for wildlife management policies and practices in the Baffin, High Arctic Region and Nunavut. The Wildlife Biologist administers activities associated with these initiatives and programs, and provides wildlife related advice to other sections, agencies and the public.

The Wildlife Biologist II develops research and management initiatives for wildlife species and populations within the High Arctic region. The primary focus of the position is research and management of caribou and muskox in the High Arctic Islands of the Baffin Region. These species can include, but are not restricted to Peary caribou, muskox, wolves, foxes and polar bears, other furbearers, hares, non-game species, rare and endangered species and their forage and prey species.

Sound knowledge of wildlife population dynamics, field and statistical techniques are required to inventory populations and model sustainable harvest levels on species that are of importance to Nunavummiut. The incumbent must have excellent English written and oral communication skills for conveying and integrating information to/from a variety of audiences, including government decision-makers, scientists, Hunters and Trappers’ Organizations and community members not familiar with scientific methodologies; Inuktitut is an asset. The ability to supervise staff is required. The incumbent must also have knowledge of Arctic terrestrial wildlife species, the role of wildlife research in wildlife management and in meeting national and international requirements. Applied knowledge of statistical procedures, applications, data tabulation, computer applications coupled with the ability to establish databases and geographic information systems relevant to wildlife data and habitats in Nunavut is required to be successful in this position. Also, the ability to estimate study costs and administer a budget is required.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a PhD / Doctoral degree in Biology, Wildlife, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related field with knowledge of Arctic wildlife species, population assessment and management techniques and some experience in government wildlife programming. However a Master’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related field with two years of experience with terrestrial wildlife species, wildlife laboratory services, government wildlife experience, legislation governing wildlife issues and/or field experience will be considered as an equivalency.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.  Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
