  • Maintaining and repairing diesel engines, generators of various sizes and auxiliary equipment;
  • Completing and/or assisting with scheduled overhauls in a timely, professional manner;
  • Providing accurate assessments of equipment and diesel plants;
  • Troubleshooting mechanical problems both on-site and over the telephone;
  • Providing on-site solutions and/or program modifications to bring systems back online as quickly as possible, and liaising with stakeholders to find a permanent resolution;
  • Assisting with residual heating systems, and maintenance of wind-generated power systems;
  • Completing trip and other reports, and maintaining maintenance documentation;
  • Preparing required-parts lists for overhauls and inventories for each community;
  • Providing estimated labour data and ensuring valid travel for related overhauls;
  • Reviewing design and equipment specifications in cooperation with the Engineering department to ensure projects meet all regulatory and QEC compliance standards;


  • Successful completion of four-year apprenticeship program;
  • Inter-provincial Journeyman Mechanic licence;
  • At least 5 years of journeyman experience in a related work environment (power plants, diesel locomotives, or marine applications);
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and propose solutions;
  • Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of various types of mechanical equipment, including manufacturer's manuals and parts books;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and work with minimal supervision;
  • Understanding of electrical power generation and related equipment;
  • Eligibility for a valid NU Class 5 driver's licence; and
  • Ability to meet vehicle insurance requirements of QEC.
