Training & Development Programs for Government of Nunavut Employees

Through Pinasuaqtavut, the Government of Nunavut has reconfirmed its commitment to Illippallianginnarniq - Continuing Learning. Within the workplace, ongoing training and development of employees is critical to building a strong and dedicated public service that can be responsive to the needs of Nunavummiut.

The Department of Human Resources is responsible for researching, designing and delivering programs that address general training needs across the Government of Nunavut. Human Resources works in partnership with all departments to ensure that employees across the government are offered relevant, high quality programs.

Cultural Orientation
An introduction to Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) and how IQ principles can be applied in the workplace.

Employee Orientation
General information sessions for new employees covering such topics as the history of Nunavut, Pinasuaqtavut, overview of Government of Nunavut departments and organizational structure and pay and benefits.

Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun Language Training
A variety of programs that address both first and second language learners.

Learning and Development
Courses, workshops and seminars that focus on enhancing employee knowledge and skills in such areas as:

  • Administrative Services
  • Communication Skills
  • Computer Applications
  • Financial Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Leadership and Management
  • Personal Development
  • Policy
  • Project/Program Management

Mentoring
Mentoring guidelines, support materials and a workshop have been developed for employees looking to be mentored and/or who wish to become mentors.

Sivuliqtiksat Internship Program
In accordance with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, Sivuliqtiksat provides an opportunity for Beneficiaries to develop in leadership positions within the Government of Nunavut – at the director and manager level. The Department of Human Resources supports a total of 16 internship positions in the program. Orientation, development of a learning plan, on-the-job training, mentoring, completion of distance education courses and participation in formal classroom learning are all important elements of the program.


These training and development programs are currently funded by the Department of Human Resources and are available to all employees (eligibility/prerequisite criteria may apply for certain programs).

Training and Development staff recognize the ever-changing and dynamic environment within the Government of Nunavut and are busy developing a number of new initiatives to address employee and organizational needs including:

  • Career Development Services for Employees
