The Honourable Levi Barnabas
Minister of Human Resources
The Honourable Levi Barnabas was elected to the 2nd Nunavut Legislature on February 16th, 2004 and served as a regular MLA for Quttiktuq electoral boundary. Subsequently, he was elected to Cabinet by his colleagues and appointed as Minister of Human Resources (HR) and Minister responsible for Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) on March 14th, 2008.
Levi Barnabas was born on January 24, 1964, in the community of Igloolik. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1995. Levi was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut to represent Canada’s three northern most communities in the general elections of 1999 and 2004.
Prior to entering public life, Levi worked as a Constituency Assistant to an elected MLA and as the Assistant Senior Administrative Office for the Hamlet of Arctic Bay. Levi entered public life in the early 1990s as chair of the Arctic Bay Housing Association, the Arctic Bay Education Authority and as an executive member of the Baffin Divisonal Board of Education.
Levi and his wife Susanna are the proud parents of three daughters: Lyn, Marie and Cynthia-Aglak; and two sons: Robert and Paingut. They live in the community of Arctic Bay on the northern coast of Baffin Island.
