“Learn to …” Schedule of Events

Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park Summer 2017 Every Tuesday 1:15 PM to 3:00 PM

 

Weekly “Learn to…” events will be offered again this summer at Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park in Iqaluit! “Learn to” events aim to get the public out to the park to learn something new. Different activities are planned until the end of August.

Learn to Light a Qulliq

This session will teach the participants to light a qulliq, make the wick and maintain the qulliq.

Learn to Understand Glaciers

This session will teach participants about how glaciers formed the park and why the terrain looks the way it does now.

Learn about Traditional Rock Uses in Nunavut Parks

This session will teach participants about the different ways rocks are traditionally used by using examples from Territorial Parks in Nunavut.

Learn to Sample Fish and Make Pitsi

This session will teach the participants on how to sample Arctic Char for Exploratory fishery and butcher and prepare Arctic Char for pitsi.

Learn to Take Photos of the Changing Environment

This session, you will learn how to observe and photograph a changing environment. Learn about the changes that are happening due to climate change.

Learn to Make a Kakivak

This session will teach participants how to make a kakivak (Fishing Spear). The equipment needed to make the kakivak will be provided and participants will be able to take the finished product home.

Learn how Archaeologists Work in the Field

This session will teach participants how archaeologists conduct field work by participating in a mock dig at the Crystal II sight (located at Causeway by the golf course).

Learn to Make a Metal Qulliq

This session will teach participants how to make metal qulliq. This program will be held at House number 1017 –Aayuraa Studio (brown building in the lower base area, near the MOT beach) instead of the Park pavilion.
