Gouvernement du Nunavut

Nunavut Education Week

Nunavut Education Week is from April 23-27, and it is a great opportunity to encourage students to thank educators for their hard work. It is also a chance to educate Nunavummiut about our education system.

This year’s theme is Learning is Everywhere. We want students to be active in celebrating this special week by asking for their input in highlighting the diverse nature of the education system in Nunavut.

The Department of Education invites students from schools across Nunavut to produce a short video that supports Learning is Everywhere. The deadline for submissions is May 18, 2012. Videos must be 2-3 minutes in length, and teams must be no more than 3 people. We encourage students to focus on learning environments and educators who support learning in their communities.

Education Week 2012 will give students the chance to express their creativity. Videos will show the diversity of learning in Nunavut, which is an innovative system that promotes Inuit language and culture, while encouraging academic excellence.

The names of all students who participate in this video project will be entered into a draw and 15 lucky students will receive a Blackberry PlayBook along with other giveaways.

Footage from all entries will be used to create one video that promotes education in Nunavut.

We look forward to the results of creative efforts as we celebrate learning in Nunavut!

Summer Student Employment Equity Program

Do you know a student who is interested in working with the Government of Nunavut (GN) during their summer break from school?

The Summer Student Employment Equity Program (SSEEP) provides an opportunity for students attending high school, college or university to work with the GN during summer break. The program is designed to help Nunavut students gain meaningful work experience within the Nunavut Public Service.

To qualify, students must be a Nunavut resident attending high school (grade 10-12), college or university. In support of Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, priority hiring consideration is given to Beneficiary students.

To apply for the SSEEP, please visit Student Program, fill out an application form, attach your résumé, and submit it to the Department of Human Resources. Proof of enrollment in school is required.

The SSEEP runs from April to September. In 2011, a total of 132 students were hired.

Community Cleanup Poster Campaign

Nunavut’s annual Community Cleanup is around the corner, and students of all ages are invited to submit a poster design to promote Community Cleanup activities across the territory.

“It is important to engage our youth in activities that promote Avatittinnik Kamatsiarniq, or environmental stewardship,” said the Honourable James Arreak, Minister of Environment. “The poster design campaign is an opportunity for youth to show us how we can take pride in our communities by demonstrating, through their vision, what a clean community means.”

Poster campaign design rules:

  • The design must be on an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper;

  • Bright colours are encouraged;

  • The design should cover the top two-thirds of the page to allow room for cleanup activity details;

  • All entries must be submitted electronically. If you don’t have access to a scanner, please contact Jamessee Moulton at jmoulton@gov.nu.ca for assistance;

  • All entries become the property of the Government of Nunavut.

Entries should be emailed to greenup@gov.nu.ca by the deadline – Friday, May 18, 2012 at noon. Entries submitted after this time will not be considered.

The winning design will be chosen by a team of environmental experts who will choose the design that best reflects this year’s theme – Off the Grid and On the Land.

The student with the winning design will receive a Voltaic Converter Solar Backpack, which can charge many hand-held electronics. For more details of the backpack, visit: www.voltaicsystems.com/converter.shtml.

This academic year, there has been increased encouragement and emphasis for the development of a Middle School Education delivery system.

The intent is to develop a program that will prepare teachers for grade 7- 9 placements in Nunavut schools. A committee was established to study and present proposals to a Partnership Committee (Nunavut Arctic College / Department of Education / University of Regina). The membership of the Middle School Committee was drawn from:

  • Nunavut Teacher Education Program, Nunavut Arctic College

  • Curriculum and School Services, Department of Education

  • University of Regina

  • Nunavut Teacher’s Association

  • Kivalliq and Kitikmeot Teacher Representatives

Two chairpersons were appointed to lead the discussions: Jim Legge (Manager, NTEP) and Bonita Tucker (Middle Years Teacher Training Coordinator with Curriculum and School Services). The Middle School Committee is meeting this week to fine-tune proposals.

We anticipate positive results from these sessions over the next several months.
