Property Tax Arrears List
July 3, 2015

As part of its work to encourage greater tax compliance, the Government of Nunavut (GN) today posted the 2015 Property Tax Arrears List online. The GN also published a condensed list of this list (those owing more than $5,000) in Nunatsiaq News.

As of June 30, Nunavut’s property owners owed almost $3.2 million in unpaid property taxes on over 1,000 different properties. About $1.6 million is due on properties owned by Shear Diamonds Ltd.

The arrears list includes all taxable properties outside Iqaluit owing more than $10, with some exceptions. For example, it does not list properties where the owner has entered into a payment plan with the GN.  The City of Iqaluit manages its own tax system, and publishes an arrears listed separately.

Before publishing this list, and as required by the Property Assessment and Taxation Act, the GN sent a multi-lingual notice to inform each owner with arrears of the amounts they owe, how they can pay, and of possible consequences of not paying.

To pay property taxes, contact the Department of Finance by emailing propertytax@gov.nu.ca or by calling 1-800-316-3324.
