Increase to the Senior Fuel Subsidy

Start Date: December 29, 2015

End Date: January 31, 2016

Nunavut-wide 60 sec

The Department of Family Services is increasing the Senior Fuel Subsidy (SFS) to 3,500 litres in each community across the territory. The change is effective January 1, 2016 and eligible homeowners are encouraged to apply. The increase is part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to review and improve social assistance to better serve the needs of Nunavummiut under Sivumut Abluqta.

The SFS is a program that aims to offset the high cost of heating fuel in Nunavut. Eligible homeowners are reimbursed for the cost of heating fuel, up to 3,500 litres. To be eligible for this subsidy, applicants must:

Be permanent residents of Nunavut.

Be 60 years of age or older.

Own and live in the home for which the subsidy is being requested.

Meet the allowable established income threshold.

Not receive income assistance.

Apply each year.

Please note that:

Homeowners with a total net income of $75,000 or less may be eligible for a 100% fuel subsidy.

Homeowners with a total net income greater than $75,000 and less than or equal to $100,000 may be eligible for a 50% fuel subsidy.

Homeowners with a total net income greater than $100,000 are not eligible for the fuel subsidy.

To apply, contact the income assistance worker in your community. For contact information, visit: http://gov.nu.ca/family-services/information/income-assistance. Additional documents are required to complete the assessment.
