Industry Canada's Computers for Schools Program donates refurbished
computers for use in Canada's classrooms. Since 1999, they have
donated over 800 units to Nunavut schools. The Government of Nunavut
Department of Education has paid for the upgrading of the units
to make them networkable and multimedia-ready, with 64mb of RAM.
But there are many other partners that make this
year's program such a success.
N3 Alliance
shipped them up to Iqaluit for free, and even crated and containerized
them to protect them during the voyage from the Montreal docks.
Arctic Express
freely moved the units from the Public Works warehouse.
First Air
gave us a 75% discount to fly them to the communities. Thanks to
Rick Lefebvre for his generous help.
Iqaluit's
RCMP "V" Division freely flies units to communities
on their plane when space is available.
Inuksuk
High School in 2002/03 piloted Nunavut's first CFS Workshop
and Computer Repair Program, donating space for GN surplus computers
to be refurbished for schools, and partnering with students from
Kinkora High School
in PEI to help develop the course package to be used for other Nunavut
schools. Check out Kinkora's Computer
Troubleshooting and Repair Website.
Thomas Associates
graciously donated tool kits for the Computer Repair Program.
Radio Shack
in Iqaluit has donated volt meters for the Computer Repair Program.
NorthMart (Northern
Store #350) is donating lab coats for the Computer Repair Program,
and space for Iqaluit schools on its sealift. Clyde River (Northern
Store #168) has followed suit with this offer, which will bypass
air freight costs altogether! Thank you NorthWest
Company!
