Senior Citizens Benefit

The Senior Citizens Benefit is designed to assist Seniors with the high cost of living in Nunavut.

Benefits
If you qualify for the federal government’s Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or Spouse’s Allowance, the federal government will automatically add the Nunavut benefit to your monthly Old Age Security cheque.

To qualify
To qualify, Seniors must:

  • Be receiving either the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or the Spouse’s Allowance from the federal government,
  • Be a resident of Nunavut
To apply
To apply, Seniors must complete their federal Income Tax Return and the application forms for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and Spouse’s Allowance.  Seniors must complete their tax return and the GIS and Spouse’s Allowance applications each year to ensure that benefits for the Nunavut Senior Citizens Benefit are continued.
