Senior Fuel Subsidy

The Senior Fuel Subsidy helps Nunavummiut age 60 and older, who own their own homes, with the high cost of household heating fuel.

Benefits
If you qualify for the Senior Fuel Subsidy, you will receive a cheque from the Government of Nunavut to reimburse some or all of your home fuel costs, up to the maximum number of liters of fuel established by the Department of Education.  Payment to reimburse costs will be made according to guidelines established under the Nunavut Financial Administration Act.

To qualify
To qualify for the subsidy, you must:

  • Be a resident of Nunavut
  • Be 60 or older
  • Be a homeowner and the principal resident of the home
  • Meet an income confirmation conducted by your Income Support Worker
  • Not be eligible for other forms of Income Support or Income Assistance.

When completing the application, the following documentation will be required:

  • Proof of age (e.g. birth certificate, driver’s license, health care card)
  • Proof of home ownership (e.g. title or deed, mortgage documents)
  • Proof of all household income (e.g. tax returns, current pay stubs, pension information)
  • Your most recent fuel bill

Subsidy applications are sent to your Regional Office of Career and Early Childhood Services to be assessed.  When the application assessment is complete, the applicant will be notified in writing of either the amount of subsidy, or the reason that you were not approved to receive the subsidy.

Applicants who are denied the subsidy can appeal decisions within 30 days to the Director of Career and Early Childhood Services.  Appeals must be made in writing to one of the Regional Offices listed below.  Your Community Income Support Worker will help you with your appeal.

Recipients must immediately notify the Department of Education of any change in family circumstances and must reapply for the subsidy every year.

Submitting bills
You must provide all fuel receipts that you have paid.

You may give the receipt to your Community Income Support Worker, or for faster service, send the receipt directly to your Regional Office:
