Day Care Subsidy

The Day Care Subsidy is offered as part of the Department of Education’s Income Support Program.  The Subsidy provides families who qualify with Income Assistance to help pay for day care expenses while working or participating in training.

Benefits
The subsidy may cover part or all of your day care costs, and is paid with a monthly cheque.  The cheque may be written to you to pay your day care provider or given directly to your day care facility.

To qualify
To qualify, you do not have to be on Income Support.

However, you must:

  • Be a resident of Nunavut
  • Have one or more dependent children 11 or younger
  • Be employed or enrolled in training/education program
  • Meet an income confirmation conducted by your Income Support Worker based on your basic needs, day care expenses, and family income.

To apply
Applications are available at your Community Income Support Office or Licensed Child Care Facility.  To avoid delays, you must fill out the application completely and accurately and provide:

  • Proof of school or training course enrollment signed by the program instructor
  • Proof of employment and hours of work (e.g. a recent pay stub or signed employer statement)
  • Proof of your day care expenses (signed by the day care provider)
  • Proof of rent/mortgage and utility costs (e.g. lease agreement, and/or signed statement from the landlord, including rental amount and terms, mortgage agreement, copies of utility bills for water, heat and power)

You will be notified in writing that:

  • Further documentation is needed, or
  • Your application is approved; the notice will specify:
    • Names and dates of birth of the eligible children
    • Monthly and annual amount of the subsidy
    • Beginning and end dates of the subsidy
    • The date when the applicant must reapply
    • Where the payment will be sent
    • Whether on-going documentation is required,

or

  • You have been denied the subsidy; the letter will indicate the reason your application was denied and provide information about the appeal process, with which you Community Income Support Officer must help.
