All categories except Transitional Assistance are also eligible for Income and Incentive Exemptions.  These exemptions allow you to keep certain amounts of income before having your Income Support benefits reduced.

Different types of benefits are delivered in different ways.  You may receive a regular benefit as a cheque or a credit at your local store.   A cheque may be issued for specific training, travel, day care or other costs associated with training or working to become more independent.  Most types of financial benefits require proof of your needs, and most types have maximums that your Income Support Worker can tell you more about.

The amount of Income Assistance a Participant receives may change from month to month because the amount is based on a calculation of your needs and income at that time.

Other benefits of the Income Support Program can include:

  • Helping you plan a career and the training you will need for it
  • Assistance arranging classroom, on-the-job or volunteer training
  • Providing your Income Support payment up to 2 months in advance if you are a recognized hunter and will be on the land
  • Helping you find professionals to help with health, family or emotional problems
  • Helping you obtain a Social Insurance Number so you can access federal benefits
  • Providing you with referrals to federal income assistance programs such as Canada Pensions, Employment Insurance, Old Age Security, the Canada Child Tax Benefit, National Child Benefit Supplement, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
