STANDARD K-12 SCHOOLS

Instructional Area

Kindergarten Classroom
Requirements: Floor carpeted for two-thirds of floor area and rolled flooring for the remaining one third. Counter with sink, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Coat and boot storage in room.

Criteria: All schools with kindergarten classes. One classroom for each 44 kindergarten students. Note: kindergarten students recognized as half-time equivalent students.

Area: 85m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 100%


Kindergarten Washroom
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. One complete washroom layout with all pertinent fixtures.

Criteria: Immediately off kindergarten classroom with direct access from the classroom only.

Area: 3m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Primary/ Elementary/ Junior And Senior Above Classroom
Requirements: Floor carpeted, with rolled flooring strip adjacent to counters. Counter with sink, cupboards below counter, open shelving counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls.

Criteria: One classroom for every multiple of 22 students, or part thereof.

Area: 70m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 100%


Specialty Depending Classroom
Requirements: Floor carpeted or rolled flooring, upon exact usage. Counter with sink, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/ whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Breakout areas to serve more than one function, with additional cabinets to meet specific needs.

Criteria: May be used for language/culture, music/drama, business/computer, or multipurpose classroom.

  • One language/culture room for every school that exceeds 132 full-time equivalent students 70m2
  • One music/drama room for every school with a senior high school (Grades 10-12) enrolment that exceeds 132    90m2
  • One business/computer room for every school with a senior high school enrolment over 66, or a combination junior/senior high (7-12) school enrolment of 132 full-time equivalent students 70m2
  • One multi-purpose classroom for every school with a senior high school (Grades 10-12) enrolment over 30, but less than 132 70m2

Art Classroom
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Counter with sink and plaster trap, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Exhaust hood depending upon exact usage.

Criteria: One art room for every school with a senior high school enrolment of more than 132, or a Grade 7-12 enrolment greater than 264.

Area: 120m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50%


Science Classroom
Requirements: Science Classroom Floor finished with rolled flooring (layout determined by location of perimeter lab units) and carpet in central area of room. Counter with sinks, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Exhaust hood depending upon exact usage. Flexible room design to respond to various needs.

Criteria: One science room for every school with a senior high school enrolment that exceeds 20 plus a second science room when the senior high school enrolment exceeds 220 students.

Area: 93m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50% for first class; or 100% for first class when second class required; 50% for second class.


Physics/ Multipurpose Science Classroom
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring (layout determined by location of perimeter lab units) and carpet in central area of room. Counter with sinks, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Exhaust hood depending upon exact usage. Flexible room design to respond to various needs.

Criteria: One physics/multipurpose science room for every school with a senior high school enrolment that exceeds 110, plus a second room when the senior high school enrolment exceeds 330 students.

Area: 93m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50% for first class; or 100% for first class when second class required; 50% for second class.


Science/Physics/ Multipurpose Storage
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Shelving and storage determined by intended use. One counter unit with sink for preparation area, open shelving and one metal cabinet for storing flammable items. Room must have a locking door.

Criteria: One storage room included with each science classroom. Physics/multipurpose classroom to share storage with science classroom.

Area: 14m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%


Career and Technology Studies
A variety of CTS programs exist to meet the educational needs of curricula. Due to this variety, there are differences in spatial requirements for different courses. The Department has recognized this need for flexibility and has designated the allocation of specific CTS programs as a Board responsibility. The following areas have been designated as qualifying spaces. However, the board may choose different options as long as those choices do not exceed the qualifying area. Any combination adding up to total net areas would be acceptable under the program.

Instructional Area

Career And Technology Studies Suite (Trades Program)
Requirements: Floor finished with concrete with coloured floor hardener or rolled flooring depending on curriculum. Counter with sinks, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard. Exhaust hoods/dust extraction units depending upon usage. Flexible room design to respond to CTS module needs. May include breakout areas for computer needs.

Criteria: One CTS suite for every school with a Grade 7-12 enrolment that exceeds 44, plus a second room when the senior high school enrolment (Grades 10-12) exceeds 220.

Area: 140m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50% for the first class; or 100% for first class when second class required; 50% for second class.


Career And Technology Studies Suite Storage
Requirements: Floor finished with concrete with coloured floor hardener or rolled flooring. Shelving and storage determined by CTS module needs.

Criteria: One CTS storage room for every CTS room. Space can be a combination of heated and unheated, but total will not exceed total allowable area.

Area: 15m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Career And Technology Studies Work Area
Requirements: Floor carpeted or rolled flooring depending on curriculum. Rolled flooring around counter units. Counter with sinks, cupboards below counter, open shelving above counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Flexible room design to respond to CTS module needs. May include breakout areas for computer needs.

Criteria:One CTS classroom for every school with a Grade 7-12 enrolment exceeding 44, and second room when senior high school enrolment (10-12) exceeds 330 students.

Area: 120m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50% for the first class; or 100% for first class when second class required; 50% for second class.


Career And Technology Studies Suite Storage

Career And Technology Studies Classroom
Requirements: Floor carpeted with rolled flooring around counter unit. Counter with sink, cupboards below counter, open shelving over counter along one wall. Blackboard/whiteboard and tackboard on walls. Flexible room design to respond to CTS module needs. Configuration similar to standard school.

Criteria: Can be selected if CTS suite and workroom are not opted for, as long as total area does not exceed qualifying amount.

Area: 70m2 Design capacity: 22 Utilization factor: 50%


Library/Resource Area
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Control counter near entrance, cupboards below counter. Tackboard on walls. Shelving, tables, study carrels determined by Board in consultation with school staff. Computer and Internet wiring required.

Criteria: One library/resource area for each school. Size determined based on the following criteria:

  • K-6: 0.25 m2/each projected full-time equivalent student enrolment (FTE);
  • 7-9: 0.35 m2/each projected FTE;
  • 10-12: 0.45 m2/each projected FTE.

Library/Resource Office
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel in door for view to main library area. Furniture determined by Board in consultation with school staff. To act as a workroom if facility not eligible for independent workroom.

Criteria: One library/resource office for each school with a full-time equivalent enrolment over 220. May be incorporated into the design if long-term plans are to increase the capacity of the school to over 220, but present capacity is below this number.

Area: 10m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Library/Resource Workroom
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Work counter with cupboards, shelving below. Storage shelves above.

Criteria: One library/resource workroom for each school with a full-time equivalent enrolment over 330. May be incorporated into the design if long-term plans are to increase the capacity of the school to over 330, but present capacity is below this number.

Area: 10m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Library/Resource Storage
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Shelving and storage determined by intended use.

Criteria: One large library/resource storage room of 14m2 for every school that exceeds a full-time equivalent enrolment of 330. One small library/resource storage of 6m2 for all other schools.

Area: Varies Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Recreational Area

Gymnasium
Requirements: Floor finished with approved rolled flooring acceptable for recreation use. All walls finished with plywood for first 2.4 metres above finished floor. All equipment, switches, connections, etc. to be recessed flush with finished wall for first 2.4 metres above finished floor. Reinforce/incorporate resilient wall surface for middle half of wall at long ends of gymnasium up to 2.4 metres high. Basketball backboards at long ends of gymnasium to be crank-up type, sidewall units may be swing-back models if they extend beyond the playing surface of the main gymnasium floor. Floor sockets to accommodate various recreation equipment. Clear ceiling height not less than 6.5 metres above finished floor; this may be higher depending upon additional requirements to meet specific sports regulations.

Criteria: Schools with enrolments below 88 do not qualify for a gymnasium. No gymnasium facility provided if an alternative recreation space is available within the community and school enrolment is below 132. For qualifying schools gymnasium will be provided as set out below.

Schools with design capacity up to 396 are eligible for a Small Gymnasium, 396m2 of which a 1.5-metre-wide area along one side outside the largest designated playing court is for players' benches and viewing. Schools with design capacity above 396 are eligible for a Large Gymnasium, 527m2 of which 1.5 metres around the complete perimeter is reserved for players' benches, viewing and safety buffer. A gymnasium when enrolments are below accepted levels requires Ministerial permission.

Area: 396m2 (small) or 527m2 (large) Design capacity: * Utilization factor: 0%

*Design capacity for school utilization purposes shall be calculated at zero. Occupancy rate shall be determined by the latest version of the National Building Code of Canada and approved by the Fire Marshall for assembly occupancies.


Gymnasium Storage
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. All walls finished with plywood for first 2.4 metres above finished floor. All surfaces resilient and water resistant. Number of fixtures determined by the latest version of the National Building Code of Canada. Benches along wall with clothes pegs. Lockers may be considered if Board is willing to fund them through their furniture contribution for the facility.

Criteria: For all gymnasiums.

Area: 28m2 for each sex Small Gym, 47m2 for each sex Large Gym Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Gymnasium/ Recreation Coordinator Office
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. All walls finished with plywood for first 2.4 metres above finished floor. All surfaces resilient and water resistant. Number of fixtures determined by the latest version of the National Building Code of Canada. Benches along wall with clothes pegs. Lockers may be considered if Board is willing to fund them through their furniture contribution for the facility.

Criteria: One gymnasium/recreation coordinator office for each school with a small gymnasium; two for a school with a large gymnasium. When two offices are required, include a shared 6m2 washroom/change room with a toilet, shower, sink and bench.

Stage
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring or hardwood. All walls finished with plywood for first 2.4 metres above the finished floor. Stage curtains part of building contract. All specialty stage lighting and sound system purchased by Board from their furniture and equipment contribution for the facility.

Criteria: For a Large Gymnasium, a stage will be included. For a Small Gymnasium, a portable stage is included as part of the contract. Alternate approaches to this area will be considered on an individual program and cost-efficiency basis in consultation with the Department. Funding for alternate spaces will usually come from sources other than the Department.

Kitchenette
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Counters with sink capable of serving community activities. Cupboards below counter, shelving with doors above counter. One full-height lockable storage unit. Dutch door with shelf at entry, or pull down shutter at service shelf opening into school lobby.

Criteria: The need for a kitchenette is at the discretion of the Department. The CTS room could fill this function with kitchen facilities if it is close to the gym.

Area: 14m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Administrative Area

General Office
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel in door for view to main entry area. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff. Shelving near door with built-in lockable storage below.

Criteria: In all schools. Area of 0.1m2 per student as prescribed by school's design capacity or a minimum of 14 m2, whichever is greater. Area not to exceed 37m2.

Area: varies Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%


Principal's Office
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Windows or viewing panel in door for view to general office area and teaching area. Furniture determined by school Board in consultation with school staff.

Criteria: In all schools. For schools with fewer than 220 students design capacity 10m2. For schools with more than 220 students design capacity 14m2.

Area: varies Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Vice-Principal's Office
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel in door for view to general office area. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff.

Criteria: Only in schools with more than 220 students design capacity.

Area: 10m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Staff Office/ Small Meeting Room
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel indoor for view to general office area. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff. Same as vice-principal's office.

Criteria: Only in schools with more than 330 students design capacity.

Area: 10m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

CEC/Seminar/ Meeting Room
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel in door for view to general office area. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff.

Criteria: Only in schools with more than 220 students design capacity.

Area: 10m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Staff Lounge
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window with view to student areas and exterior. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff. Shelving near entry with built-in lockable storage below. Staff washrooms adjacent to lounge area with minimum one washroom for each sex. Staff work area adjacent this room, or attached. This room to serve as a staff work room as well when the design capacity is less than 88.

Criteria: Area of 14m2 minimum or 0.1m2 per student as prescribed in school's design capacity. Area not to exceed 46m2.

Staff Washrooms
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Countertop sinks with additional support for front edge. Washroom stalls and side splash units as required. Durable, water-resistant walls.

Criteria: Number of fixtures and handicap-accessible standards determined by latest version of National Building Code of Canada.

Area: varies Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Staff Work Area
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Countertop sinks with additional support for front edge. Washroom stalls and side splash units as required. Durable, water-resistant walls.

Staff Work Area
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Work counter with storage underneath and lockable storage cabinets above. Furniture determined by the Board in consultation with school staff. Adjacent to lounge area and staff washrooms. Staff work area may be combined with the staff lounge as part of one large area.

Criteria: For schools with design capacities over 88 students. Area of 0.1m2 per student as prescribed by the school's design capacity or a minimum of llm2, whichever is greater. Area not to exceed 46m2.

Cousel Office
Requirements: Floor carpeted. Window or viewing panel in door with blinds. Furniture determined by Board in consultation with school staff.

Criteria: One counsel office for each school with Grade 7 and higher. For eligible schools with total design capacity above 220, a 6m2 reception area may be added. Schools with more than 396 students design capacity have a second office.

Support Area

Dental Suite
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Counter with lockable storage underneath and lockable storage above. Sink mounted in counter. See the Department of Health for their standards on this room. As part of the furniture formula funding allocated to the Board, the following items shall be provided: 3/4 HP McKesson compressor, desk, filing cabinet, two chairs.

Criteria:One dental suite for each school with Grades K-6 and enrolments above 110 design capacity.

Area: 14m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Medical Room
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Furniture includes one cot and two chairs. Small counter with lockable storage underneath. Sink mounted in counter. Fluorescent lighting plus incandescent light on dimmer switch. Adjacent to general office. This is a temporary holding room while waiting for medical assistance. It is not to be considered as space for diagnostics or treatment.

Criteria: One medical room for each school with design capacity above 110.

Area: 8m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%


Dental/Medical Room Washroom
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Standard washroom configuration. Room dedicated for these uses only. Walls durable and water resistant.

Criteria: One room per dental or medical room. If both rooms exist in the facility, this will be a joint-use room.

Area: 3m2 Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Janitorial Space
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Shelving for bulk storage of cleaning items, and supplies. Storage racks for various cleaning equipment. Slop sink. Wall finishes durable and water resistant.

Criteria: One small janitorial space adjacent the changing rooms in the gymnasium, 3m2, with slop sink. Rest of area in a single large room. Area between two rooms not to exceed 0.1m2 per student as prescribed by the school's design capacity, up to a maximum of 110 students; above this level, an additional 0.05m2 of janitorial space per student prescribed by the school's capacity, to a total area not to exceed 25m2.

School Storage
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring for heated space, painted plywood for unheated storage. Shelving for bulk storage and storage racks for various equipment.

Criteria: Area 0.2m2 per student as prescribed by the school's design capacity, up to a maximum of 110 students; above this level, an additional 0.1m2 of school storage per student as prescribed by the school's design capacity, but total cannot exceed 50m2. Space can be a combination of heated and unheated, but total will not exceed total allowable area.

Service Area

Washrooms
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring. Countertop sinks with additional support for front edge. Washroom stalls and side splash units as required. Walls durable and water resistant.

Electrical/ Service Rooms
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring, anti-skid painted plywood, or concrete with coloured floor hardener. Walls durable and easily maintained.

Criteria: Standards determined by the latest versions of the National Building Code of Canada and the applicable electrical code.

Area: varies Design capacity: 0 Utilization factor: 0%

Mechanical/ Service Rooms
Requirements: Floor finished with rolled flooring or antiskid painted plywood, or concrete with coloured floor hardener. Walls durable and easily maintained. Storage shelving and work counter top to accommodate minor equipment/parts and maintenance area.

Criteria: Standards determined by the latest versions of the National Building Code of Canada and the Mechanical Code.

Circulation Area

Circulation Areas
Requirements: Several areas are used for circulation in the building, including lobby, coat/boot storage areas, corridors, hallways, and student gathering spaces. Their design should respond to specific program needs, but not exceed 20% of net program areas. Net program areas shall include all instructional, recreational, administrative and support areas. Every effort shall be made to provide an efficient design with minimal circulation space.

Criteria: These circulation spaces shall be included in all buildings.

Miscellaneous Area

Specialty Rooms
Requirements: The Department does not fund a variety of areas outside normal user needs. These include spaces such as gymnasium viewing gallery, auditorium, cafeteria, swimming pools, greenhouses, radio studios, dark rooms, etc. Their design shall respond to specific needs, with service standards determined by the latest versions of the National Building Code of Canada. Area allocation shall include associated circulation areas required to meet its needs.

Criteria: These ancillary spaces shall be determined through community consultation. Funding for these spaces usually will come from sources other than the Department.
