The Official-Language monitor Program
The Official-Language Monitor Program (OLMP) is a pan-Canadian
program created in 1973. Its objective is to promote the two
official languages of Canada by encouraging young Canadians
across Canada to share their language and culture with students
in another region of the country. The Department of Canadian
Heritage provides funding and the administration is assumed
by the provinces and the territories. The Council of Ministers
of Education, Canada (CMEC) coordinates the program at the
pan-Canadian level.
With the goal of promoting Canada’s two official languages,
part-time or full-time second–language monitors are
provided to educational institutions to help second-language
teachers/professors convey to students the real life aspects
of the language they are studying and an awareness of the
culture associated with that language.
In addition, part-time or full-time francophone monitors are
provided to francophone minority regions where French is the
principal language of instruction, to develop students’
knowledge of their language and culture.
