Statement

Fire at the new airport terminal building in Iqaluit

September 6, 2015

Iqaluit, NU

A fire alarm was initiated by the City of Iqaluit dispatch to the on-call airport firefighter at 7:45 p.m. on September 5, 2015, for a roof fire at the new airport terminal building in Iqaluit.

Both the Iqaluit Fire Department and airport fire crews rapidly responded, and the fire was quickly extinguished in a coordinated effort between the two crews. No injuries were reported.

The fire is presently under investigation by the Office of the fire marshal and the Iqaluit Fire Department. At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined. The Office of the fire marshal will be releasing preliminary results of the investigation later today.

The airport remained operational for the duration of the fire, although the sector near the new airport terminal was closed to traffic.

It is not clear if this fire will have any effect on the schedule for completion of the Iqaluit International Airport Improvement Project. An engineering investigation by the design builder is necessary beforehand to determine the extent of fire and water damage. However, the fire is not expected to have any effect on the cost of the project for the Government of Nunavut.

The Government of Nunavut would like to acknowledge and thank every person who provided assistance, in particular the Airport Fire Department, the Iqaluit Fire Department, the RCMP and Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement.
