The theme for Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 is Unikkaatuat (Inuit Legends). Inuit Legends technology enabled our ancestors to thrive in the Arctic environment. Our traditional and contemporary Inuit Legendss are an important form of art and cultural expression, showing relationships, spirituality, and our perceptions of the world.
Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq is Nunavut’s annual celebration of Inuktut and Inuit culture. The theme for 2017 is Inuit Legends.
Started in 2017, Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq will be a full month long, from February 1 to 28.

February is Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq - Inuktut Language Month, a time for Nunavummiut to celebrate Inuit language and culture across our territory. This year’s theme is Unikkaaqtuat, which means Inuit legends. We encourage everyone to participate in this year’s celebration by speaking, teaching, and learning Inuktut!
The Department of Culture and Heritage in Iqaluit celebrate the start of Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017 – Language Month – by wearing their blue Inuit Titirausingit keyboard shirts and holding their Inuugatta banner, which can be translated to mean “we are all Inuit and we are alive.” Join Culture and Heritage in celebrating Language Month by engaging in this year’s theme, Unikkaaqtuat – Inuit legends.
Celebrate Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2017!
Culture and Heritage employees Saa Pitsiulak (left) and Tocasie Burke (right) hold up Unikkaaqtuat (Inuit Legends) workbooks, which are being shipped to every community in Nunavut. The workbooks contain a collection of Inuit legend stories, as well as interactive activities like crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions.
