NUNAVUT PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEMS
Library Services provides resource materials, technical support and program
information to 11 community libraries. On-line as well as conventional support will be
an ongoing feature of these services. Library Services works with the Gates Foundation
to provide additional resources to community libraries such as computers, software and
related equipment.
Literacy promotion - Coming Soon
Nunavut Public Library Services strive to provide people across the territory with access to resources that enrich their lives as Nunavummiut and as citizens of the global village. We offer leadership to Nunavut communities to recognize and support Nunavut public libraries as vital contributors to growth and change. Our libraries welcome all community members and support their needs for access to information and opportunities for personal growth. We strive to offer programs that contribute to our social, economic and cultural well-being by preserving northern traditions, cultures and languages and encouraging life-long learning and literacy.
Programs and Services: Borrow by Mail
Borrowers-by-mail are patrons living in communities in Nunavut that don't have a local community library. If this is your situation, the Iqaluit Office of NPLS looks after your borrowing needs by mailing you library items as requested. You can set up a borrower profile for regular shipments, or request only specific items.
Guidelines
Any borrower by mail is able to request a number of items, within the following limits:
up to seven (7) books at any one time, only three of the seven being on the same subject or by the same author
three (3) magazines
two (2) audiocassettes
two (2) videos (documentaries only)
two (2) music compact discs (CD)
Requests can be made through fax, telephone, e-mail or mail.
Materials can be requested by title, author, or subject area. If by chance you suggest something that is outside of Nunavut, we can request it from another Canadian library on an interlibrary loan.
The loan period on the items sent vary depending on what they are:
books and magazines from Nunavut are loaned for 6 weeks;
audio materials (CDs and audiocassettes) are loaned for 6 weeks and will be supplied only if available in Nunavut;
documentary films are loaned for 4 weeks and will be supplied only if available within Nunavut;
books borrowed from outside our system (interlibrary loans) must follow the lending library's regulations.
The due date for any item returning to the Baker Lake Office will be clearly indicated on each item. It is possible to lose borrowing privileges if any item was not returned in a timely fashion.
Each shipment of materials sent to you will have pre-paid return mailing labels included. This enables you to receive and return materials at no cost.
Once you have requested to become a borrower by mail, a letter with the above information along with a patron card will be sent to you. An adult patron card, a juvenile patron card, or both may be sent to you depending on what you are requesting.
