New Departmental Names Support Use of Inuktitut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 7, 2004) – The Government of Nunavut has approved translations of all departmental names in Nunavut’s official languages. This move ensures that the grammar used in the translation of departmental names is consistent and easy to understand.

“Setting a high standard for translations helps us protect and promote Nunavut’s official languages,” said Minister of Culture Language Elders and Youth Louis Tapardjuk. “The newly translated departmental names are clear and concise, making it easier for Nuanvummiut to identify departments and the services and programs they provide.”

The Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth conducted a comprehensive review of departmental names in all official languages. A terminology working group consisting of a team of language professionals, including the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut and representatives of most of Nunavut’s dialects participated in the review. The group reviewed the names of each department and recommended changes which were accepted by Cabinet.
