Community Programs
Grants and Contributions
The Community Programs Division provides funding to non-profit community-based organizations and individuals who wish to pursue projects that contribute to the development of initiatives in the following areas:
- Arts Contributions
- Promotion and Protection of Nunavut’s Official Languages
- Culture and Heritage Initiatives
- Culture and Communications Initiatives
- Youth Initiatives
- Elder’s Initiatives
- Capital Contributions for Elder, Youth and Cultural Facilities
- Nunavut Toponymy Program
WHAT ARE GRANTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS?
Funding set aside to assist those who have an idea that contributes to the preservation and/or promotion of Nunavut’s culture, heritage or language.
YOUR PROJECT MUST BE NON-PROFIT IN NATURE.
Applying as a non-profit organization?
Organization must be registered at Legal Registries, and registration papers must be included.
Applying as an individual (under own name)?
Individuals are responsible for declaring amount approved as income for income tax purposes.
How will I know when to apply?
Early in the new year, ads are placed in the newspapers and fax notices are sent to hamlet offices and radio stations throughout Nunavut notifying the public that the Department is accepting applications. The deadline to submit a proposal is March 31, 5pm EST Iqaluit time (Capital Contributions deadline is March 15 @ 5pm EST).
What is a Grant?
Funding that is awarded at less than $15,000 is a grant. Grant payments are made in one lump sum.
What is a Contribution?
Funding that is awarded for more than $15,000 is considered to be a contribution, and recipients have more accountability.
What about writing the proposal?
Application forms are available online at or from the Grants and Contributions Administration Officer. By filling out the application form you have, in essence, written your proposal. Please provide two support letters with the completed application.
