Leona Aglukkaq won the election for the district of NATTILIK (communities of Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak) in the election held on February 16, 2004.

Ms. Aglukkaq was then elected to the Executive Council by the Members of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut on March 5, 2004. The Minister was assigned the Finance portfolio and the title of House Leader.

Ms. Aglukkaq was born in the north and was raised in Thom Bay, Taloyoak and Gjoa Haven.

Ms. Aglukkaq has enjoyed an extensive career in the Governments of both the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. In addition to Housing and the Department of Finance, she has worked in Management in the Departments of Personnel, Human Resources, and Education, Culture and Employment.

Ms. Aglukkaq has also served as an Assistant Deputy Minister of Human Resources, as well as the ADM for the Government’s Decentralization Secretariat.

From September of 2000 to April of 2002, Ms. Aglukkaq served as the Deputy Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Prior to the election she was the Deputy Minister for Culture, Language, Elders and Youth for the Government of Nunavut.

Ms. Aglukkaq has served on a number of Boards including the Arctic College Board of Governors, the Nunavut Impact Review Board and the NWT Science Institute. She also served for 6 years as a Hamlet Councilor for the community of Cambridge Bay
